24 Hours in Mt Wakid

8-9th March 2018

Halo everyone!

It's been a while since the last entry to this blog. A lot of things happens as the world spun around us until I can't even feel the time pass by. However, we the wandering souls managed to make time for another journey. We can't afford to waste a fine day, good companies and calm nature.  Wanderlust must have another trip into the wilderness no matter when or where to.

As it had been decided we had a two day one night camping on an open camping ground deep in the jungle. When I say deep in the jungle, it was really in the jungle. No other people around, only the wilderness and wild animal. Me and one of my friend had been in this place before back in 2015 and the place had completely changed. Like 360 degree. It used to be a beautiful preserved nature but this time we only could see post apocalyptic trail and lot less vegetation. No matter what, the plan must go on and we set our camp there under a large I-don't-know-what-type of tree by the river bank. Accompanied by two local friendly guide we had a good relaxing night. The night was blanketed in laughter along with karaoke and card games.

As the first visitor of the storm aftermath, there were quite a bunch of stories to tell. I have no idea how bad was the storm prior to our visit but imagine a large boulder as huge as a small sedan been unearth from the riverbank. Must have been a horrifying one, most local crops along the river were washed away by the flood and the terrain was completely mutilated. The supposed to be trail was gone too that we had to trod on the new path. Anyway it was a fun and tiring walk from the meeting point to the campsite. All the sweats paid off in the end.

It's always a good experience to be able to let loose for a day in the wild, even this place isn't really the virgin unexplored place. Honestly, campsite was actually a local territory means that it's owned by the local, inherited from their ancestor perhaps but preserved in a way that the nature remained natural. Despite the agricultural activities around it, this spot was reserved for tourism purpose. A very young tourist attraction though, just established less than 5 years ago when tourism had been promoted quite astonishingly in Sabah.

This had been another last minute plan since all of us are on tight schedule at work. But last minute plan are always the one that is full of surprise and we love surprises. I'm not joking. It's amazing. I lost the cap that I usually wear on every vacation but I'll let that one pass. It marked my early morning hike to the summit and also a journey of a lost traveler in that particular mountain. As we spent our 24 hours here in Mount Wakid, we left the whole world behind for a while. No internet, no television, no phone call. Only camera. It's surprisingly relaxing. The next morning as we reached the top of the mountain, the only place we managed to get signal, we were greeted by the news that there had been an earthquake the night before. Everyone was trying to reach us during the quake but we were obliviously having fun. No one was injured, and no things were broken though so it was a relief.

Trying to catch the sunrise we get up at 4:30am and took 45 minutes to reach the summit. The sunrise view? It's beautiful! Although the thin cloud obstructed the very first light but we managed to catch the moment the sun emerged majestically later. Those were the moments that just don't happen everyday. I have not watched a proper sunrise for as long as I started working, so seeing the sunrise, feeling the moist air on my skin so early in the morning like this is a blessing. It makes me wanted to have more adventures and feels the thrill sipping into every vein in my body.

Descending down the mountain, everyone was expecting the main event on our second day which supposed to be the waterfall abseiling. It was quite a disappointment though. The waterfall was gone! The river is there but all that was left at the once-a-waterfall was a massive rock and waist deep pool. The hooks that were meant for the abseiling are broken too. So, the abseiling was cancelled for safety reason. Hopefully it will be restored soon because we still wish to try on the abseiling once in the future.

Alright, that's all I have to report today. I'll see you in my next entry.
